APGOCATS will be holding a policy update meeting on 28 October where we will discuss some of the key areas and their progress, including the Renters’ Rights Bill, the Animal Welfare (Import of Dogs, Cats and Ferrets) Bill, and the need for cat breeding regulations.

The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cats (APGOCATS) has now been re-established following the inaugural meeting which took place on Tuesday 12 November 2024 in Parliament.
It is great to have the group restarted in the new Parliament to support discussion and debate about what politicians and the Government can do to further feline welfare.
Following a vote at the meeting, Johanna Baxter MP was elected to the position of Chair and Cat Eccles MP, Lord Black of Brentwood, Lord Goddard of Stockport were elected to the positions of Vice Chairs.
There was also a policy discussion at the meeting which covered key areas including preventing cat and kitten smuggling, calls for regulating cat breeding, banning the use of electronic shock collars on cats and dogs, and pet-friendly housing.
The group also discussed areas of focus for APGOCATS in the future and future meetings.

There will also be a policy discussion where we will cover key areas including; the Kept Animal’s Bill and the introduction of compulsory microchipping for pet cats in England, as well as exploring new areas relevant to cat welfare the APPG can focus on in the future.

The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cats held an event in Parliament on 14 March 2023 calling for cats to be included in pet theft law.
APGOCATS is concerned that cases of recorded cat theft have reached an all-time high according to data from Pet Theft Awareness. The Cat Theft report 2022 has found that, in 2021, the number of cases has increased an astonishing 40% since 2020 and quadrupled since 2015. Unfortunately, current proposals for a new offence of pet abduction will not include cats at the outset.
We were delighted that over 50 politicians attended. It was great to have so many parliamentarians show support for cats to be included in any new pet abduction offence.

APGOCATS will be holding it’s 2022 AGM on the 27th April. Also on the agenda will be issues relating to pet theft, attacks on cats and pet travel.

The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cats will be holding an Extraordinary General Meeting. This meeting is required to elect a new co-chair for the group. APGOCATs are very grateful for all the work our previous co-chair, Steve Reed MP, did with the group over the years.
The meeting will also be an oppertunity for members to discuss the publication of the loneliness report and the next steps for the group.
